About Us

The Lyrical Sultan is a Record Company / Artist Management agency that was set up in 1991 by Mr. J. L. Brown. The Company was set up with the intention of guiding / helping to guide, while also riding with Dancehall music on it's natural progression towards the 'Next Level'. Mr. Brown (Junior) always thought that given the chance, Dancehall Reggae and Reggae music in general, would be able to stand on par and sell 'unit-for-unit' with any other musical genre out there. For this reason (in our eyes) Shaggy's 'Diamond' selling album (~ Hotshots ~), Sean Paul's 'Billboard #1' (~ Get Busy ~), and Wayne Wonder's 'British Pop chart #3' (~ No Letting Go ~) along with other Reggae / Dancehall successes were a long time coming. Plus the brilliant thing about Sean Paul and Wayne Wonder's success is that these tunes were actually made directly for the Dancehall market, and they still managed to cross over.

We now have a dedicated network of individuals working with us. One of our main objectives at the moment is to help to introduce our music to the wider markets by having our artists work with producers and artists from as many difference musical backgrounds as possible. This is beneficial all round as :

  • Our recording artists gain the experience and exposure from working in these genres.
  • The people they are working with gain not just a spiced up version of their tracks, but also the experience of working with us.
  • Both sets of fans get a well deserved treat.

While trying to break the international markets we have always been cautious of the need to keep the hardcore bashment fans 'on side'. After all, even though we know we cannot please everyone, we also know that the hardcore fans are the true foundations of Dancehall Reggae music. To a Dancehall Record Company and its artists, the hardcore fans are and will always be some of the most loyal. We know some of these fans think that the music and all its performers should stay 'hardcore', but we have enough faith in the music to know that the hardcore base will always be there as a new artist is born everyday. Plus in the same way that we could not all be Producers, as then there would be no Artists, we cannot expect that every Dancehall Artist is going to take the 'hardcore' route, as this would only serve to make the music stagnant. We genuinely believe that if we prove there is a viable market for Dancehall music internationally (whichever way we do this), in the end it will serve to make life a lot easier and much more profitable for all who are involved in Dancehall Reggae.

With the above in mind our aim is to provide artist and music to the world that are worthy of, if not moving towards the next level, then helping to sure up the foundations for this forward move.
